Quotes About Addicts

Addiction is a complicated disease.  While society tends to think of addiction in terms of substance abuse, addiction comes in many forms.  Today, many individuals around the world are addiction to fame, social media, pornography, and gaming.

All of these addictions can overtake one’s life leaving a trail of despair and failures.  But every day is a new day!  Although an addiction may consume someone’s life, we should not pass judgment on their life choices.

No one chooses to have an addiction.  Often times, addiction is the result of underlying issues, like self-esteem and past unhealed trauma.  Every day is a struggle for an addict.

To help everyone understand the difficulties addicts face each day, read these quotes about addicts!

“One thing I’ve learned is it’s better to be addicted to things than people. You get hooked on a thing and if someone takes it from you, you can find another source. Only people can really hurt you. Only people can push you out into the cold permanently”
A.M. Riley
“…most Substance-addicted people are also addicted to thinking, meaning they have a compulsive and unhealthy relationship with their own thinking”
David Foster Wallace
“The attempt to escape from pain, is what creates more pain”
Gabor Maté
“There are all kinds of addicts, I guess. We all have pain. And we all look for ways to make the pain go away”
Sherman Alexie
“The question is frequently asked: Why does a man become a drug addict?  The answer is that he usually does not intend to become an addict. You don’t wake up one morning and decide to be a drug addict. It takes at least three months’ shooting twice a day to get any habit at all. And you don’t really know what junk sickness is until you have had several habits. It took me almost six months to get my first habit, and then the withdrawal symptoms were mild. I think it no exaggeration to say it takes about a year and several hundred injections to make an addict.
William S. Burroughs
“Understanding the difference between healthy striving and perfectionism is critical to laying down the shield and picking up your life. Research shows that perfectionism hampers success. In fact, it’s often the path to depression, anxiety, addiction, and life paralysis.”
Brené Brown
“Whether you sniff it smoke it eat it or shove it up your ass the result is the same: addiction”
William S. Burroughs
“Reality is just a crutch for people who can’t handle drugs”
Robin Williams
quotes about addicts
“I admire addicts. In a world where everybody is waiting for some blind, random disaster or some sudden disease, the addict has the comfort of knowing what will most likely wait for him down the road. He’s taken some control over his ultimate fate, and his addiction keeps the cause of his death from being a total surprise”
Chuck Palahniuk
“We are addicted to our thoughts. We cannot change anything if we cannot change our thinking”
Santosh Kalwa
“I have absolutely no pleasure in the stimulants in which I sometimes so madly indulge. It has not been in the pursuit of pleasure that I have periled life and reputation and reason. It has been the desperate attempt to escape from torturing memories, from a sense of insupportable loneliness and a dread of some strange impending doom”
Edgar Allan Poe
